Community-owned shops, pubs and facilities

We welcome loan applications from people who want to set up and run community-owned shops, pubs, resource centres and other local facilities.

In recent years we have helped some 70 community-owned shops start up, expand or build new premises.  We have been working closely with the Plunkett Foundation and the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation to provide a combined package of expert advice, grants and loans.

We work with a number of organisations that provide specialist advice on how to set up a community business including the Development Trusts Association, Co-operatives UK, The Co-operative Enterprise Hub and the Plunkett Community Shop Network.

To apply for a loan first check that you are eligible and then complete the application form.

Cwm Trannon

Lodsworth Larder

Cwm Trannon is a remarkable community facility that serves two remote villages in mid Wales. With use of the loan we provided to the co-operative in 2010, it bought and refurbished the local garage to set up a shop, Post Office, cafe, workshop, and an area available for community use. It also established what may be the only community-owned petrol station in the UK. www.cwmtrannon.co.uk Lodsworth Larder is an eco-friendly, non-profit, and award winning community shop located in a small village in West Sussex. It was awarded the Sussex Heritage award in 2010 for an outstanding community project. Due to its success, a number of small related businesses have been inspired to open up in the village. Having no local shop since 1988, the community came together to raise money, take a loan from us, and set up the shop. www.lodsworthlarder.co.uk
